Juozas Matulaitis was born on March 8, 1936 in the village Užgirėlis, district of Kaišiadorys. He attended secondary schools in Kruonis and Žiežmariai. 1955–1957 he studied in the technical college in Kaunas. 1960–1964 J. Matulaitis studied in Kaunas Interdiocesan Seminary. He was ordained priest on March 25, 1964. 1964–1984 Rev. J. Matulaitis worked as vicar and afterwards was pastor in the parishes of Pivašiūnai, Nemaniūnai, Vievis, Butrimonys, Merkinė. In 1984 he was appointed dean of the Merkinė deanery. Rev. J. Matulaitis was consecrated bishop on March 18, 1989. 1989–1991 bishop Juozas Matulaitis was the apostolic administrator of Kaišiadorys diocese. In 1992-2012 His Excellence Msgr. J. Matulaitis was the ordinary bishop of Kaišiadorys.
On February 11, 2012 Pope Benedict XVI accepted the resignation of bishop J. Matulaitis and appointed bishop J. Ivanauskas the bishop of Kaišiadorys.
